Literature
Autumnal Heart
She smells of dry earth
and late-season rains,
dust clouding her sun-starved skin;
green-yellow leaves,
rusting autumn around the edges,
peek from strands

still, pivot, freeze--
the heart of her trapped

in the attic of my mouth
and the basement of my hands--

of this dystopian (uni)verse
and know better than to reach
for you now,
the room

smothering plumes of breath and killing
lapselands.
bags of grieving skeletons hang from your
cliff eyes, dreading the moment
when they will have to fly.
